Guangzhou, capital city of South China's Guangdong Province, initiated a charity project for nonnative women in the city on July 16.
All women who have migrated to Guangzhou, whatever their ages or occupation, can participate in this social-insurance plan. For a single payment of 66 yuan (US $10), any woman can enjoy two years of guarantee services, including financial aid for some serious diseases, insurance for traffic accidents and medical care for pregnant and lying-in women and new-born babies.
Individuals suffering from some serious diseases will be offered a compensation fund of 12,000 yuan.
The project is an upgraded version of the charity program Guangzhou Mothers Charity Project organized by the Women's Federation of Guangzhou City. Targeting Guangzhou local women, the program has been held three times since its launch in 2012. More than 1.8 million local women in Guangzhou have participated in the project, receiving total relief funds of nearly 50 million yuan.
Liu Mei, President of the Women's Federation of Guangzhou City, said that as the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) developed rapidly, more and more talents from the GBA and other places in China will flock to Guangzhou. The city also attracts many talents from other countries in the world.
Data provided by the city's Bureau of Migrant Service show that Guangzhou is now home to over 4 million female migrant workers, who should also be covered in the charity project for women.
"That's why the federation and the Guangzhou Women and Children Welfare Association have upgraded the previous coverage," Liu added.
