Cervical and breast cancers ("two cancers") are the main disorders that threaten women's health.

Nearly 130,000 new cases of cervical cancer are reported each year, and 20,000 to 30,000 women die from the disease annually. The incidence of breast cancer is increasing at an annual rate of 3 to 4 percent with 260,000 new reported cases per year. The incidence of breast is the highest among malignant tumors in women in Beijing.

In the last five years, the health level of women in Beijing has improved significantly due to complete coverage of long-term free screening for the two cancers.

In 2008, Beijing launched the pilot work of the free "two-cancer" screening. It is the first city around the country to implement the free screening work. In 2009, the free screening covered the whole of Beijing. Guided by the government, free "two-cancer" screening can diagnose early stages of the diseases, and it has become an effective measure for preventing and controlling cervical and breast cancers in Beijing.

Beijing has formed a long-term "two cancer" screening mechanism with a two-year cycle since 2011. "Two-cancer" screening targets women from 35 to 64 years old.

From 2008 to 2016, 2.28 million women received cervical and/or breast cancer screening in Beijing, with 3,948 cases of precancerous lesions of cervical cancer, 264 cases of cervical cancer, and 1,262 cases of breast cancer and precancerous lesions detected.

In order to increase the detection rate of the two cancers and precancerous lesions and reduce their incidence and mortality as well as improve women's health, Beijing will further improve the free screening for cervical and/or breast cancer and free physical examinations for married women of childbearing age.

From 2019, the optimized screening for the two cancers will be carried out every three years for women aged 35-64 with registered permanent residence in Beijing.
